Health & Safety
Many oil and gas companies have operations in extreme climates, and this work can pose a number of hazards, including extremes of temperature as well as wind and humidity. Guidelines produced by IPIECA (Global oil and gas association for environmental and social issues) aim to provide practical information to line management and health professionals in order to help protect and maintain health, and prevent accidents, illness and loss of life. The guidelines can be downloaded from the IPIECA website.
IMO provide guidance for Cold Water Survival in MSC.1/Circ.1185 (May 2006).
This guidance is intended primarily for seafarers. It provides information which will help you if you are unlucky enough to fall into cold water, or have to enter it in an emergency, or have to use survival craft in cold conditions. It also provides information which will help seafarers, trained as first-aid providers, to treat those rescued from cold conditions.
Report by Government of Canada on Survival in Cold Waters (2003) - TP 13822 E
The report is designed to provide knowledge to a wide variety of people from manufacturers of immersion suits to cruise ship operators required to provide protective clothing for their ship’s company; and from naval medical officers and marine safety inspectors who need to understand the problems of the dangers of cold water to masters of fishing vessels who also need to know the problem and do not know where to get the answer. Therefore, each chapter has been written as a standalone chapter and can be read on its own.
