The Green Curriculum Training Standard
The Nautical Institute’s Green Curriculum sets out what we believe seafarers need to know in order to handle novel fuels safely, and what those responsible for introducing the fuels need to know when making decisions about their use.
Even before COP26 in October 2021, The Nautical Institute was already asking questions surrounding the issue of alternative fuels. It was clear to us that there needed to be a considered approach to training and familiarisation for these novel fuels. As the world’s leading organisation of maritime professionals, we were well placed to promote best practice in the establishment of training standards for seafarers to handle these green fuels safely, and offer insights and updates on the implementation of these changes.

Free Seaways Article: An ocean of change
The increasing focus on zero emission shipping is likely to have a considerable impact on maritime operations in the very near future. The shipping industry finds itself in something of a dilemma, with the imminent introduction of ‘green’ fuel policies leaving most, if not all, shipowners in a ‘catch-up’ situation in order to meet new requirements – and, perhaps just as importantly, new stakeholder expectations.
