The advance of technology has changed the development of and the reliance on visual aids to navigation, but they continue to be vital tools for mariners to assess and verify their position.
Visual aids to navigation should continue to be used to:
• reduce the risk of navigational errors to avoid accidents and damage to the environment
• mark navigational hazards, such as wrecks that may not be visible on the surface
• verify the vessel’s position, providing essential redundancy to electronic navigation systems
This book is just one of the ways The Nautical Institute can help you with Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Professional development has always been a main focus for The Nautical Institute and was the reason that our publications, self study schemes and accreditation services were set up. It remains the most important reason for membership and drives the Institute to ensure it is properly recognised and valued by employers, regulators and society at large.
Membership of a professional body is an obvious sign of one's commitment to being professional, particularly where professional body membership is not a regulatory requirement. The Nautical Institute exists to promote and support the professional development of its members throughout their maritime career, both at sea and ashore.
