The October 2023 issue of The Navigator is out now- Automatic Identification System (AIS) has been a transformative technology for the shipping industry and navigators alike.

Today, if you 'see' a ship you can clearly identify it by clicking on the AIS symbol on the radar or ECDIS and ascertain the vessel’s name, callsign, and additional information like its course, speed, and destination. However, a good navigator must understand AIS’ strengths and weaknesses to make the best decisions.

The October issue of The Navigator, “All about AIS What AIS can do – and what it can’t”, covers essential topics such as: the pros and cons of AIS; types of AIS transmission; how to use AIS safely; and how AIS is evolving as a result of technological breakthroughs. It is essential reading for those keen to discuss the best use of AIS with their bridge teams.

Guest contributors in the edition include:

- Gregor Stevens and Arvind Natrajan AFNI from the International Chamber of Shipping who explore practical ways to use AIS on a ship

- George Shaw from the Royal Institute of Navigation looks at how to use AIS safely and some of the risks that must be overcome to ensure its ongoing value
