Question mark appearing against some symbols - what does it mean?

Using  ENC GB50302B, which is the 1:8,000 chart covering the approach to Harwich, I get strange question marks adjacent to the beacons off Landguard Point (Fig 1). They only appear when the display is set to Traditional Symbols. When using Simplified Symbols the question marks disappear (Fig 2). What is their meaning and why the difference between the two display settings?
