Concerns with alarms and settings

My concern is alarms and their settings. For example, on a very large vessel which has a large change in draughts between ballast and fully laden, what happens if I plan for a future ballast voyage, whilst the OOW is route monitoring on the current fully laden voyage? If the current safety contour setting is 25m, and I then set the safety contour setting for the ballast voyage which is 10m, what alarm settings is the equipment using for "route monitoring" whilst I am planning? Those for the current voyage or those for the planned voyage?

RESPONSE

(From ECDIS Ltd)

If we assume that the Safety Depth from the start point and end point are different, then it will use the one for the route being monitored as it cannot have two Safety Contour settings in use at once.

This is all down to good training and a robust set of procedures. Some systems have in built safeguards to counter this problem such as a system of ‘privileges’ and the ability to protect your route to stop non authorised personnel from editing the route. The primary safeguard, however, is a robust use of SMS procedures for ECDIS and a liberal application of common sense.

Again, why are you planning and monitoring on the same ECDIS?
