Passage planning as required in STCW requires more than just lines on a chart. Passage planning with ECDIS is a unique skill that may only be acquired on these training courses. One may find that the passage planning on the ECDIS makes little use of Parameter settings, ship or voyage, or leg settings where changes are required on an individual leg so that the ECDIS gives adequate warning of running into danger, where the training is inadequate. A useful paper would contrast the Passage plan on the Paper chart and that on ECDIS and offer some advice on the minimum required for an effective passage plan on ECDIS.
