The functional, seaworthy, open wooden boat has been replaced by the totally enclosed shell of brittle glass-fibre, with seakeeping qualities unsuitable for conditions beyond the most sheltered waters. Increased reliance on technology has resulted in complacency throughout the industry, and the tacit acceptance of marginally inadequate survival equipment.
