Keeping a Radar Watch
Report No. 200271

A VLCC was due to be handed over from the current managers on completion of discharge and for the loaded passage a C/O and C/E were placed onboard for familiarisation. It was noted that the vessel was only keeping single handed watches on the bridge at night and both radars were switched off whilst the vessel was at sea to ensure that they would be 'ready for when they were needed'. This was obviously an extremely unsatisfactory and downright dangerous situation and one that was immediately corrected on change of management.
