In a briefing held last Friday, the Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization, Mr Arsenio Dominguez, has outlined his priorities and focal issues for the upcoming semester.
Our CEO Capt. John Lloyd FNI, Director of Projects David Patraiko FNI and Senior Technical Advisor Chris O’Flaherty AFNI, attended the briefing alongside many other NGOs that hold consultative status at the IMO.
Mr Dominguez highlighted the number of maritime security challenges faced by our industry, including the laden oil tanker MV Sounion, adrift in the Red Sea, and MV Galaxy Leader, which continues to be held hostage by Houthi rebels.
We have regularly advocated to raise the profile of increasing levels of seafarer criminalisation and abandonment. These topics are among the Secretary General’s priorities to be addressed during upcoming IMO meetings.
An ongoing IMO project remains that of increasing gender representation and diversity in the maritime industry. The Nautical Institute remains delighted to continue supporting this initiative.
Our CEO Capt. John Lloyed FNI asked about the ongoing review of the IMO Goodwill Ambassador Scheme. The Secretary General confirmed that all existing Goodwill Ambassadors, including four Nautical Institute members, will continue doing their outreach work until a full appraisal of the scheme has been completed.
We continue to advocate at the IMO on behalf of all our members and will be represented at all the IMO Committee and sub-Committees this term.
