The implications for maritime lecturers of the move from further to higher education, away from acquisition of technical skills to active engagement of students, are assessed.

Technical proficiency must be underpinned by understanding for cadets to be truly competent and lecturing is not the best way of teaching. The emphasis must be on what the cadet is doing rather than what the lecturer is doing.
