The Nautical Institute at the IMO Polar Maritime Seminar

Our CEO Captain John Lloyd FNI, participated in a panel discussion during the 2025 Polar Maritime Seminar at IMO Headquarters, last week in London. The event, co-hosted by the IMO and Norway’s Chairship of the Arctic Council, in cooperation with the Protection of the Arctic Marine Environment Working Group of the Arctic Council (PAME), brought together over 200 participants from nearly 100 countries to discuss key issues in Arctic and Antarctic shipping, including safety, environmental protection and specialist training.

In his presentation, "Filling the Gap: Competence Assurance in Ice Navigation," Capt. Lloyd highlighted the urgent need for practical experience in ice operations, beyond current Polar Code and STCW training requirements. He emphasised the Nautical Institute’s Ice Navigator Certification, which ensures seafarers gain verified sea time in ice conditions, bridging the gap between theory and real-world competence.

"Delighted to support the IMO and PAME initiatives and provide an update on The Nautical Institute’s specialist Ice Navigation qualification," said Captain Lloyd.

The Nautical Institute remains committed to enhancing training standards to ensure safe and sustainable operations in these remote yet fragile regions.
