AIS SART (Search And Rescue Transponder) approved and being fitted
AIS SARTs have now been approved and may be seen in both shipborne and personal versions. Two new AIS SART units have now been approved and these may be seen in the event of a emergency at sea. One unit is a shipborne unit (which may replace the Radar SART), which broadcasts both position and the AIS text message ìSART ACTIVEî.
The MMSI for the shipborne unit starts with "970" and then the manufacturer code (2 digits) and a unique serial number (4 digits). The other unit is a compact personal unit, which broadcasts both position and the AIS text message ìAIS SART ACTIVEî.
The symbol for the AIS SART, when shown on a display, is a cross in a circle but if the display has not been brought up to the latest standards then a normal ship icon will be shown.
