200728 Rogue give-way vessel
The VDR radar pictures (1-3) show a near-miss at night in clear weather that could have been easily avoided if the give-way vessel (a small coaster) had only reduced speed and/or altered to starboard, instead of altering course to port and maintaining her speed.
At the time, own vessel was under inward pilotage and our chief pilot relayed our intention to turn a full round to starboard to another inbound container ship following about two miles astern. All attempts to contact the coaster proved futile and she resumed her NE'ly course soon after own vessel went into her evasive manouvre.
1: Target about 1.5 NM on port bow, course 042°, speed 12 .0 knots
2: Target about 0.5 NM on port bow, course 358°, speed 12 .4 knots, own ship commenced evasive action
3: Target about 0.5 NM on port beam, course 358°, speed 12 .4 knots, own vessel turning full circle to starboard
