Don't Use the radar in good visibility?
MARS Report 200512

The question is, why not? I have come across two senior Masters on different vessels who have told me so. Nothing is as good as the human eye but it does get tired and it is poor at assessing distances. Whereas the radar gives accurate range information and helps in early detection. It is useful for predicting collision avoidance and never ever tires out. Not using a radar would also mean not complying with the 'COLREGS' - Rule 5 (by all available means) and Rule 7 part(b). So, don't you think using radar in good visibility, in broad daylight, would constitute good watch keeping?

I am very surprised at this report as I had assumed the idea of "saving the radar in case we get fog" had died out years ago. Apparently it is still happening in some cases. Do you have any recent experience of this? Please let me know.
