This course is designed for current and aspiring Safety Officers on cargo ships and focuses on practical, task-based training. Delivered online over three (3) days, it ensures flexibility and accessibility for participants worldwide.

The curriculum includes key areas such as the role of a Safety Officer, safety training, maintenance of Fire Safety Systems (FSS) and Life-Saving Appliances (LSA), emergency preparedness, risk assessments, and communication skills. During the course, different regulatory requirements, in particular those from the Code of Safe Working Practice, are discussed in detail. The course is not only designed to fully prepare candidates for the role of a Safety Officer but also enhances their safety management skills, with a focus on compliance and emergency preparedness.

The online format is highly interactive, featuring live exercises, quizzes, and real-world case studies to reinforce learning.

Course Overview

The course is divided into six modules and focuses on several different relevant topics including:

  • Role of the Safety Officer - expectations of the Master, qualification requirements under STCW and ISM Code, and the Safety Management System.
  • Safety Familiarisation and training - ISM requirements and identifying training needs for crew members
  • Maintenance and repair - Fire Safety Systems (FSS), Life-Saving Appliances (LSA), and Planned Maintenance Systems.
  • Emergency preparedness - encompasses muster lists, contingency plans, drills, and exercises.
  • Safety administration - risk assessment, safety inspections, accident reporting, and documentation per ISM requirements.
  • Communication - addressing cultural dimensions and body language for effective shipboard operations.
Who should attend?
The course is designed for members of the maritime community, specifically those in the industry who are or who are aspiring to be the on-board safety officer. Although there are no formal pre-requisits, participants should have at least twelve (12) months experience on board at sea.  
Duration

Online:

  • Three-day online course via zoom. Four hours per day, including breaks. 

Face-to-face:

  • Two-day face-to-face course. Approx 6 hours per day, including breaks.   
Certification
At the end of the course, candidates can expect to receive a Nautical Institute Academy Certificate of Completion and 12 CPD points.
