Leadership and Management - Maritime Operations

Leadership and management are often talked about in ways that suggest the two skills are interchangeable. This course has been designed to explore what leadership is and learn how the skills of leadership, motivation, performance can significantly improve your skills as a manager.
The course is designed for candidates to explore leadership, management, motivation and performance. By looking at the key principles of leadership and the behavioural characteristics of well-motivated employees, participants are encouraged to consider how to increase motivation.
The course provides participants the opportunity for participants to consider what demotivates people and how they might prevent or reduce de-motivators in the workplace. The course goes on to take an indepth overview of equality and diversity in the workplace, and into how to recognise and manage conflict on board and ashore.
This course is divided into five modules:
- Module 01: Understanding leadership
- Module 02: Understanding conflict management
- Module 03: Developing yourself and others
- Module 04: Motivating and motivating a team effectively
- Module 05: Motivating to improve performance
Designed to help candidates:
- Develop knowledge and understanding of leadership as required by a practising or potential first line manager.
- Develop knowledge and understanding of motivation theory and how it can be applied in the workplace to improve performance as required by a practising or potential first line manager.
- Develop knowledge and understanding of managing conflict and supporting individuals as required by a practising or potential first line manager.
- Develop knowledge and understanding of developing self and others as required by a practising or potential first line manager.
- Understand the concept of leading and motivating a team effectively in the workplace.
Online:
- Five-day course. Four hours per day (excluding breaks), live instructor via Zoom.
- Four to six hour home study/assignment.
- Online exam (mutiple choice)
Face-to-face (company only):
- Three-day course. Six hours, 30 minutes per day (excluding breaks)
- Four-day course. Five hours per day (excluding breaks)
- Four to six hour home study/assignment.
- Online exam (mutiple choice)
The course is designed for individuals aspiring to or currently holding supervisory or team leader roles.

There are no formal prerequisits to join this course however, a basic understanding of leadership in the maritime industry is beneficial.
This is a pass/fail course.
To achieve a pass, participants must:
- Attend the course in full,
- Complete the assigment and,
- Demonstrate the ability to complete all required elements of practical tasks during the course, to the satisfaction of the instructor.
Upon completion of the Leadership and Management Maritime Operations course candidate will receive a Certificate of Completion (eCopy) from The Nautical Institute. This course is a ILM approved Level 3 Certificate in Leadership and Management.
