Celebrating 50th Anniversary of the Nautical Institute in PERTH, WA (16th Sept 2022)

NI Western Australia Branch celebrates the 50th Anniverssary of the Nautical Institute and the 20th Anniverssary of its own Branch, being held at the ANZAC Club.

Combined Session CoMMA and NIWA) - 24th Jan 2022 - Senator Ben Small (Keynote speaker)

The NIWA and Company of Master Mariners (WA Branch) have a special "Guest Speaker" for 24th Jan 2022 - Senator Ben Small - being held at the Flying Angel Club, Fremantle.

The topic will not be a presentation but an open Q & A Session: ASK THE SENATOR ANYTHING?  For example - anything from his life at sea, or working at Woodside, or questions on tax – any question is a good question.  Whatever is of interest to the crowd on the day.

2021 End of Year Session

The Nautical Institute Western Australia Branch organised an end of year 2021 sundowner event on 10th December 2021 at the Navy Club, Fremantle. We planned this event to invite NI WA Branch members and guests from COMMA, IMAREST and marine industry to catch up with each other for social networking and a brief update on NIWA activities in 2021.

We were only a handful at first and then slowly numbers increased from 10 to 22 in total. We socialised and introduced ourselves to each other, followed by some nibbles that arrived whilst we chatted and reflected on the year gone by.

We then had our Vice-Chairman Capt. Stuart Davey run through our 2021 events and provided a look ahead for 2022.

Technical Forum Held at HR Wallingford Simulator Centre 15 Sept 2021

The Nautical Institute, WA Branch arranged a technical-networking event hosted by HR Wallingford at their Perth Simulation Centre. The afternoon started by attendees arriving at the centre followed by social networking over a working lunch, followed by a brief introduction by Chairman Capt. Peter Waller, who introduced Ben Spalding the HR Wallingford Manager, who gave the audience a short presentation on the centre and work done by HR Wallingford on a global scale. The main topic was a discussion around the grounding of the container vessel EVER GIVEN in the Suez Canal.

NIWA Breakfast Technical Forum held at Perth SIM Centre (09 Aug 202) - Challenges in DP Operations.

The NI WA Branch arranged a technical breakfast session at the Perth Simulation Centre on 09th Aug 2021. The session commenced at 07am (early for most) with attendees networking amongst themselves over a coffee and some cake/muffins, which was followed by Capt. Rajeev Punnen introducing the session / topic – Challenges in Dynamic Positioning Operations. Rajeev introduced Oliver Bailey (Centre Director) and Andrew Rogers (DP Instructor) of the Perth SIM Centre, followed by the entire crowd moving to the presentation room. We had a total turnout of 23 members/guests.

NI WA 2021 Annual Awards presentation on 09 Aug 2021 at the Perth SIM Centre

The NI WA Branch Honorary Chairman Capt. Peter Waller took the opportunity and also presented the 2021 Annual Awards to the winner Mr. Mitchell Cullen and runner up – Mr. Louis Riboni, both of whom have recently completed their cadetship training on the STS Leeuwin in March 2021 (12-month training program). The Nautical Institute of WA Annual Award recognises the academic and personal achievement of a student/s undertaking selected nautical studies at a training establishment and in 2021 the selection was from the Leeuwin Foundation.

The Nautical Institute of Western Australia’s Annual Award is given every year to a student studying a nautical science subject at South Metropolitan TAFE in Fremantle.  Following an absence of a few years the award was reinstated in 2015.  The award not only recognises the student’s academic performance but also communication skills, problem solving, values and beliefs as well as mentoring and role model behaviours exhibited.
